Sugar Snap Pea is one of the most popular snap pea varieties and is a winner of the All-America Selections (AAS) Award. It is well known for its thick, crisp, sweet pods that are eaten whole without shelling, making it one of the finest varieties for fresh eating and cooking.
The plants produce vigorous climbing vines that typically reach 150–180 cm (5–6 ft) in height, so a trellis or other support is recommended. The pods are straight, plump, and measure approximately 7–9 cm (3–3.5 inches) long. They have a bright green color, a crisp texture, and contain small peas when first ready to harvest, which gradually fill out as they mature while the pods remain tender and flavorful.
This variety is prized for its exceptionally sweet, juicy flavor and crunchy texture. It is excellent for eating fresh straight from the garden, as well as for salads, stir-fries, steaming, and freezing, while maintaining its excellent quality.
The crop is typically ready for harvest in 60–70 days from sowing and produces abundant harvests over several weeks when pods are picked regularly. It also has good resistance to several common pea diseases, helping to maintain strong productivity throughout the growing season.
The seeds do not require light to germinate. Sow them directly into the soil at a depth of 2.5–4 cm (1–1½ inches) and keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which usually occurs within 7–14 days, depending on temperature.
This variety is well suited for cultivation in Kuwait and the Gulf countries during the cool season. Direct sowing is recommended from October through January. Seeds may also be started in pots or seed trays during September and transplanted carefully while the seedlings are still young to minimize root disturbance. Harvest typically takes place from December through March, depending on the planting date.
Plant in a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. Space plants 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart, with 60–90 cm (24–36 inches) between rows. Providing a trellis or climbing support improves air circulation, makes harvesting easier, and increases yields. Regular harvesting encourages continuous pod production throughout the season.
