Buttercrunch is a popular Butterhead lettuce variety developed by Cornell University and recognized as an All-America Selections winner in 1963. It has good vigor and notable heat tolerance compared with many other lettuce varieties, with relatively slow bolting when temperatures rise.
The plant produces a medium-sized head with bright green, tender leaves and a softer, lighter-colored inner heart. It has a crisp yet tender texture and a mild, slightly sweet buttery flavor, making it excellent for salads, sandwiches, and lettuce wraps.
Young leaves can be harvested early, while full heads generally take around 60–70 days to mature, depending on growing conditions. It is well suited to home gardens, raised beds, and containers.
In the Gulf region, it is best grown during the cooler growing season, particularly from October to February, with early seed starting recommended to establish strong plants before transplanting to their final growing location.
