Devil's Yellow is an heirloom, open-pollinated hot pepper variety prized for its striking golden-yellow fruits, rich fruity flavor, and exceptional pungency. Its vivid color and intense heat make it a favorite among chili lovers who enjoy peppers that combine ornamental appeal with outstanding culinary performance.
The plants are vigorous, upright, and well-branched, typically reaching 60–90 cm in height. They produce abundant harvests of conical to elongated peppers with pointed tips, usually 5–8 cm long. The fruits mature from green to a brilliant golden-yellow color and have smooth, glossy skin with firm flesh, making them excellent for both fresh use and processing.
Devil's Yellow delivers a rich, fruity taste followed by extreme heat ranging from approximately 100,000 to 250,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). This places it well above cayenne peppers and many jalapeños, making it an excellent choice for hot sauces, salsas, marinades, pickling, drying, chili flakes, and spicy powders where both vibrant color and powerful heat are desired.
Plants usually begin producing ripe peppers about 90–100 days after transplanting. Harvesting fruits regularly encourages continuous flowering and fruit production, allowing the plants to remain highly productive throughout the growing season.
Pepper seeds require warmth and consistent moisture for successful germination and do not require light during the germination stage. Sow seeds in seed trays at a depth of 0.5–1 cm and keep the growing medium evenly moist. Under suitable temperatures, germination typically occurs within 7–14 days.
This variety is well suited to cultivation in Gulf countries during the warm growing season. Seeds are best started indoors during August and September, then transplanted outdoors during October and November at the beginning of the main season. A second planting can also be started in February for a spring crop. Harvest generally begins from December to February for autumn plantings and from April to May for spring plantings, depending on planting date and growing conditions.
For best results, grow in a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. Space plants 40–50 cm apart with 60–80 cm between rows. Regular irrigation and balanced fertilization promote vigorous growth and abundant yields, while frequent harvesting helps maintain continuous production throughout the season.
