Gold Nugget is an heirloom, open-pollinated winter squash variety known for its small, round fruits with bright golden-orange skin, subtle striping, and light ribbing. It has dense, deep orange flesh with a creamy texture and a naturally sweet, rich flavor. Its compact fruit size makes it ideal for individual servings, and it is excellent for roasting, baking, soups, and purées.
The plants have a strong and relatively compact growth habit compared to many winter squash varieties, producing a good number of uniform fruits that typically weigh 600 g–1 kg (1.3–2.2 lb). This variety matures earlier than many winter squash types, with fruits ready for harvest in approximately 85–90 days from sowing. The fruits also have good storage ability after harvest while maintaining their excellent flavor and quality.
Gold Nugget is well suited to the Gulf region. For best results, sow seeds from October to November or in February. Direct sow into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, and provide consistent watering throughout the growing season to encourage vigorous growth and an abundant harvest of high-quality fruits.
