Sugar Pie is an heirloom, open-pollinated pumpkin variety renowned for its small to medium-sized, round fruits with a bright orange color. It is one of the most popular pumpkins for cooking and baking, especially for pies, thanks to its thick flesh, rich sweetness, and excellent eating quality.
The plants are vigorous and produce medium-length vines with a generous yield of fruits typically weighing 2–4 kg (4.5–9 lb). The pumpkins have a smooth, firm rind, while the flesh is thick, deep orange, fine-textured, and nearly fiber-free. Its naturally sweet flavor makes it an excellent choice for pies, soups, baking, purées, and a wide range of homemade recipes.
In the Gulf countries, seeds are best sown during October and November to take advantage of the cooler growing season. Under favorable conditions, the fruits are ready for harvest in approximately 95–110 days, producing a plentiful harvest of uniform, high-quality pumpkins.
