Little Marvel Shelling Pea is one of the most popular shelling pea varieties. It is an heirloom variety and a winner of the All-America Selections (AAS) Award. Known for its compact plants, heavy yields, and outstanding-quality peas, it has remained a favorite among gardeners for generations thanks to its dependable performance and delicious sweet flavor. It is an excellent choice for home gardens and raised beds.
This variety produces compact plants that typically grow 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) tall, usually requiring little or no support, although a light trellis can help keep the plants upright when heavily loaded with pods. The plants produce straight, green pods measuring approximately 7–8 cm (3 inches) long, with each pod containing 6–8 plump peas. The peas are bright green, tender, and well-filled at maturity.
Little Marvel is prized for its rich, sweet flavor and tender texture. As a shelling pea, only the peas are eaten after removing them from the pods. They are excellent for fresh eating, soups, stews, and other cooked dishes, and they retain their outstanding flavor and quality when frozen.
The crop reaches maturity in approximately 60–65 days from sowing. It is known for producing abundant, continuous harvests when pods are picked regularly. The variety also has good resistance to several common pea diseases, helping maintain vigorous growth and reliable production throughout the season.
The seeds do not require light to germinate. Sow them directly into the soil at a depth of 2.5–4 cm (1–1½ inches) and keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which usually occurs within 7–14 days, depending on temperature.
This variety is well suited for cultivation in Kuwait and the Gulf countries during the cool season. Direct sowing is recommended from October through January. Seeds may also be started in pots or seed trays during September and transplanted carefully while the seedlings are still young to minimize root disturbance. Harvest typically takes place from December through March, depending on the planting date.
Plant in a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. Space plants 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart, with 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) between rows. Regular watering and frequent harvesting encourage the plants to continue producing pods throughout the growing season while ensuring the highest quality harvest.
