Texas 1015 Super Sweet is one of the world's most famous short-day onion varieties. It was developed in Texas, USA, to produce exceptionally large bulbs with a mild, sweet flavor. The variety was named 1015 because its traditional planting date in its region of origin is October 15. It is widely recognized as one of the most popular sweet onion varieties.
This variety produces large, round to globe-shaped bulbs with light yellow skin and crisp, juicy white flesh. Bulbs typically reach 10–12 cm (4–5 inches) in diameter and usually weigh 300–450 g (10–16 oz), with some exceeding 500 g (18 oz) under ideal growing conditions. Its exceptionally sweet, mild flavor makes it perfect for fresh salads, sandwiches, grilling, roasting, and cooking.
The crop reaches maturity in approximately 110–120 days from planting. It is known for its vigorous growth and its ability to produce large, high-quality bulbs when grown in full sun with consistent moisture. The variety also offers good resistance and tolerance to several common onion diseases, combining strong plant performance with excellent bulb quality and sweetness.
The seeds do not require light to germinate. They should be covered with about 0.5 cm (¼ inch) of soil and kept consistently moist without overwatering. Germination usually occurs within 7–14 days, depending on temperature.
As a short-day onion, this variety is highly suitable for cultivation in Kuwait and the Gulf countries. Seeds are best started indoors in pots or seed trays from July through August, with sowing continuing into September if desired. Transplant the seedlings to their final growing location from October through November when temperatures become milder. Harvest is typically from February through April, depending on the planting date and local growing conditions.
Plant in a sunny location with well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Sow the seeds approximately 0.5 cm (¼ inch) deep. Once seedlings reach 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) in height, transplant them, spacing plants 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart with 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) between rows to allow the bulbs sufficient room to develop to the full size.
