Sweet Marjoram is a fragrant perennial herb, often grown as an annual, with soft gray-green leaves and a warm, sweet aroma. It is widely used to season meats, poultry, fish, soups, sauces, and vegetable dishes, and can be enjoyed fresh or dried. The plant grows into a compact, bushy habit, reaching 30–60 cm in height, and produces small white to pale pink flowers that attract pollinators.
Growing Instructions for Kuwait & Gulf Countries
For an early season, start seeds indoors from August to September. Direct sow outdoors from October to November when temperatures become milder.
Seeds require light to germinate, so sow them on the soil surface and gently press them into place without covering them with a thick layer of soil. Germination typically occurs within 7–14 days at temperatures between 18–22°C (64–72°F) while keeping the soil consistently moist.
Plant Care
Sweet Marjoram thrives in fertile, well-drained soil and prefers full sun or at least 6 hours of bright light each day during the growing season. Water moderately, allowing the soil surface to dry slightly between waterings. It grows well in containers and garden beds, and regular pinching or harvesting encourages a fuller, bushier plant with abundant foliage.
Harvesting
Harvest leaves and tender stems once the plant is well established. Regular harvesting promotes continuous new growth, and the leaves can be used fresh or dried for long-term storage while retaining their excellent flavor and aroma.
