Amaranthus Seeds – Hopi Red Dye (Organic)
Amaranthus Hopi Red Dye is a unique heirloom organic amaranth variety traditionally grown by the Hopi people of the southwestern United States. It is prized for its deep burgundy-red flower heads, which have historically been used as a natural red dye for textiles, baskets, and ceremonial purposes. Today, it is valued as both a striking ornamental plant and a versatile edible crop.
Plants grow vigorously to approximately 150–240 cm (5–8 ft) tall, producing large, upright crimson flower plumes that create a dramatic focal point in gardens and floral arrangements. The foliage often develops attractive reddish-purple tones, adding ornamental value throughout the growing season.
This variety thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and is highly tolerant of heat, making it well suited for cultivation in the Gulf region during the appropriate growing season.
Recommended sowing time in the Gulf: Sow from August through September in door. Seeds can be started in seed trays or sown directly in the garden after temperatures become moderate. They require light for optimal germination, so press the seeds gently onto the surface of the growing medium without covering them, and keep the soil evenly moist until germination.
Besides its ornamental appeal, the young leaves can be harvested and cooked like spinach, while the nutritious seeds can be collected when mature and used in porridge, baking, or other recipes. The flowers are also excellent for fresh and dried floral arrangements, and the plants attract bees and other beneficial pollinators.
