Musquée de Provence is a traditional French heirloom, open-pollinated pumpkin variety known for its large, flattened, deeply ribbed fruits and distinctive tan-orange color at full maturity. It is highly regarded for its attractive appearance and exceptional eating quality, making it one of the finest pumpkins for culinary use thanks to its rich flavor and dense flesh.
The plants are vigorous and produce long vines, yielding large fruits that typically weigh 5–10 kg (11–22 lb), with even larger pumpkins possible under ideal growing conditions. The fruits mature from dark green to a rich tan-orange color, while the flesh develops a deep orange color with a smooth texture and sweet, rich flavor that becomes even better after a short storage period. It is an excellent choice for soups, baking, purées, and pies, and also stores well after harvest.
In the Gulf countries, seeds are best sown during October and November to take advantage of the cooler growing season. Under favorable conditions, the fruits are ready for harvest in approximately 110–125 days, producing an abundant crop of large, high-quality pumpkins.
