Honeynut is an open-pollinated winter squash variety that combines a compact fruit size with exceptional flavor. It produces small, pear-shaped fruits with deep orange skin at maturity and dense, dark orange flesh that becomes even sweeter and richer after a short period of post-harvest curing. Its naturally sweet, nutty flavor makes it an excellent choice for roasting, baking, soups, purées, and other gourmet dishes. The convenient fruit size is perfect for preparing one or two servings with minimal waste.
The plants are vigorous and productive, yielding a generous number of uniform fruits that typically weigh 500–900 g (1–2 lb). The flesh has a smooth texture and a high dry matter content, creating a rich, creamy consistency when cooked. The fruits also store well after harvest while maintaining their outstanding flavor and quality.
Honeynut is well suited to the Gulf region. For best results, sow seeds from October to November or in February. Direct sow into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, and provide consistent watering throughout the growing season to encourage vigorous growth and an abundant harvest of premium-quality fruits.
