Common English Lavender (also known as Vera Lavender) is one of the most popular and traditional varieties of English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and is widely used in gardens and home cultivation. It is an heirloom, open-pollinated variety known for its blue-purple flowers, strong and distinctive fragrance, compact growth habit, and narrow silver-green foliage.

The plants produce dense flower spikes covered with fragrant purple blooms. The flowers are highly valued for drying, making fragrances, crafts, and decorative arrangements, in addition to their ornamental value, adding beauty and a natural aroma to gardens and containers. Vera Lavender is known for developing into a long-lived perennial plant with an elegant form when grown under suitable conditions.

In the Gulf countries, it is recommended to start sowing this variety in seed trays during August in a bright, protected location away from direct intense heat, then transplant the seedlings to their permanent location during October and November when temperatures become milder. Sowing can also be started during September to produce plants ready for transplanting at the beginning of the growing season.

Common English Lavender (Vera) seeds require light to germinate well, so they should not be buried deeply when sowing. Scatter the seeds on the surface of the growing medium and gently press them to ensure good contact with the soil. Cover them with only a very thin layer of vermiculite or fine sand, while providing good light during the germination period. Seeds usually require 2–4 weeks to germinate, and germination may occur gradually, so the soil surface should be kept lightly moist without overwatering.

This variety prefers light, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and should be planted in a location receiving 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Once established, it is best watered deeply when the soil becomes dry, as lavender performs best in well-aerated soil with reduced excess moisture around the roots.

Pruning after flowering helps maintain its balanced shape and encourages dense growth in the following season. Common English Lavender (Vera) is an excellent choice for home gardens, containers, and landscape planting in the climate of the Gulf countries, thanks to its beautiful flowers and distinctive fragrance.
