Crystal White Wax is one of the most well-known short-day white onion varieties. This heirloom variety has been cultivated for over a century and is prized for producing bright white bulbs with a mild, sweet flavor. Also known as White Bermuda, it is one of the best varieties for producing pearl onions for pickling, while allowing the bulbs to mature results in medium-sized onions that are excellent for fresh use and cooking.
This variety produces smooth, round bulbs with glossy white skin and crisp, juicy white flesh. Mature bulbs typically measure 4–7 cm (1.5–3 inches) in diameter, while they can be harvested earlier at 2.5–4 cm (1–1.5 inches) to produce premium pearl onions for pickling. Its mild, sweet flavor and tender texture make it ideal for salads, sandwiches, grilling, roasting, cooking, and pickling.
The crop reaches maturity in approximately 90–100 days under suitable growing conditions. It is known for its vigorous growth, uniform bulb production, and good resistance to Pink Root, making it a reliable variety for warm-climate cultivation.
The seeds do not require light to germinate. Sow them approximately 0.5 cm (¼ inch) deep, cover lightly with soil, and keep the soil evenly moist without overwatering. Germination usually occurs within 7–14 days, depending on temperature.
As a short-day onion, this variety is highly suitable for cultivation in Kuwait and the Gulf countries. Seeds are best started indoors in pots or seed trays from July through August, with sowing continuing into September if desired. Transplant the seedlings to their final growing location from October through November when temperatures become milder. Harvest is typically from February through April, depending on the planting date and local growing conditions.
Plant in a sunny location with well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Sow the seeds about 0.5 cm (¼ inch) deep. Once seedlings reach 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) in height, transplant them, spacing plants 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart with 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) between rows to provide enough room for the bulbs to develop to their full size and quality.
