Matador Viking Spinach is an heirloom, open-pollinated variety and one of the most popular European spinach varieties, valued for its large, smooth, glossy dark green leaves. It is known for its vigorous growth, high productivity, and rich, mild flavor with a tender texture, making it an excellent choice for fresh salads as well as steaming, sautéing, soups, baked dishes, and green smoothies.
This fast-growing variety develops strong plants with broad, uniform leaves. The outer leaves can be harvested continuously while allowing the plant to produce new growth, or the entire plant can be harvested once it reaches full size. It is typically ready for harvest in 40–50 days from sowing and is well known for producing abundant yields of high-quality leaves throughout the growing season.
Matador Viking is well suited for cultivation in the Gulf countries during the agricultural season from October to February. Seeds can also be started in seed trays during September to produce transplants ready for planting at the beginning of the season. Sow the seeds directly 1–2 cm deep in the soil and keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which usually occurs within 5–10 days under suitable temperatures.
This variety performs best in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and benefits from regular watering to maintain consistent soil moisture without waterlogging. It grows best in full sun during the cooler months or with morning sun and light afternoon shade during warmer conditions, producing large, tender, high-quality leaves throughout the season.
